JACOB FOR THE THIRD TIME BELGIAN CHAMPIONSHIP IN WINDY REGATTASFor the
fifth consecutive time, patin sailors gathered at Twins Club Bredene to sail
the Belgian Open Championship. Each
of the 12 competitors had already sailed one or more of the former
Championships. On
Saturday, a strong westerly breeze ( 25 - 30 knots ) blows under a bright sky. The
first race starts on schedule, but the wind strengthens and a current against
wind builds the waves up ( 2m and + ). Only
6 boats finished the race. Conditions
were hard and sails and material suffered damage ( Bernard broke his mast, two
paddles were lost, … ). Heavy
weather specialist Mark shows unmistakably his potentials and finishes first.
Under unanimity the second race was postponed, which was lucky for
Bernard as his spare mast stayed home. Sunday
starts in rain and low clouds. A
chilly NW breeze ( 22 knots ) didn’t appeal, so we welcomed the RC decision
to wait another hour. As the rain
stopped and the wind tended to decrease to 20 knots, we gave it a go.
Simon, the youngest and leanest competitor, decided it would be wiser to
stay ashore : a decision which pleased his father ( and sponsor ! ). Three
consecutive races were sailed that day. Bernard
took his revenge in race 2. In race
3, Gert was one of a few who spotted the favoured pin end and sailed first from
start to finish. With one discard
after 4 sailed races, there were 4 potential Champions in the final race, each
with 4 points. Although the wind
was calmed to a gentle breeze, Mark broke his mast ; probably a result of
tensions during the first race. Jacob
showed his strength by finishing first. Bernard
passed Gert mid-race, the latter being beaten at the finish by Stefan. For the
third time, Jacob seizes the Belgian Champion Trophy.
Bernard and Gert again finish second and third.
Mark finishes fourth with the same points.
Stefan shows very good but irregular results.
A steady fifth place for Jurgen. The
same steadiness for Brothers Boris and Dimitri.
Herwig improves as the race proceeded.
Hans used to close the finish gate, but receives the Perseverance Trophy
For Johan, the buoys seemed too large : he receives the Stubborn Trophy.
No
Demolition Trophy : for the second consecutive time the Championship was
protest and incident free. The
Chippendale Trophy ( competitors spouses choose the man with the greatest sex
