FOR THE FOURTH TIME ( and his third consecutive win ), JACOB SEIZES THE  NOSEPASA BELGIAN CHAMPION CUP

album BELGIAN CHAMPIONSHIP 2006

Again Twinsclub was the venue for the sixth edition of the Belgian Championship.  The competitors from previous editions were all present, together with six new entries.  In total 17 Belgian boats and 1 sailor with the Luxembourg nationality entered the series.  This is a new record of entries, and acknowledges the efforts the Nosepasa makes to stimulate the competitive sailing in our beautiful watercrafts.  Due to the continuous effort of the Twinsclub-team, an attractive program of social activities welcomed the patinairos and their families on a Tapas evening on Friday and Paella dinner on Saturday evening.

This is the first year the championship is spread over three days, with a planned total of six races.  Other novelty : three patinairos aged 18 or less confirmed the interest and future of patin sailing in our countries.  The nosepasa will surely make an issue attracting more foreign entries in future editions.

Racing started on Friday evening, sunny with a gentle breeze ( 3 Bft or 10 knots ) .  Eighteen patins gliding through the reflecting sunset made an exceptional scenery.   Simon surprised everybody by rounding the marks first, but lost his distinctive advance by capsizing at the downwind mark. In the end it was made out that after completing a 360, he didn't even rounded the mark, so a DSQ followed.

On Saturday morning, racing started nervously with a general recall.  The wind increased from 14 to 20 knots and the whole day the sun shined relentlessly.  Simon took revenge by finishing second after a strong Jacob.  During race 3 the current changed direction and increased to a max 2.5 knots, which drifted the leeward mark.  As a result an exceptional long race ( > 2 hr ) with an exhausting upwind beat, after which Bernard ( after Jacob ) beated Simon for the second place by one second.  After this torture, a fourth race was cancelled.

On Sunday the weather looked grim, with showers and gusts of winds till 24 knots.  Rain made for a very poor visibility during the race.  Not surprisingly, a lot of boats didn't finish.  Gert finished first, followed by Bernard and Simon, who as a youngster showed his ability to handle foul weather as well.  Patrick Kindt was unlucky to break his mast.   After lunch, visibility was improving but the waves started forming.  After another breathtaking race, the patinairos decided to halt the championship after five races, as continuing the regattas would certainly result in more damage.  Some eight boats had an exhilarating run downwind back to De Haan.

So Jacob was again unbeatable, with one slide in Race 4 ( was it the poor visibility ? ).  Bernard ranks second, as last year, but followed by Simon with the same points.  ( Next year, the Youth will take his second place  ?  Is it time to start a Senior Class in the Nosepasa rankings ? ).  So Gert was beaten off the podium by his son, but cherishes his first place in Race 4.  Jurgen keeps improving and sailed an impressive Race 4.  Strong performances by Boris, Mark, Johan and Antoon ( the first new entry ).  Paul impressed everybody by his performance on the oldest boat.  Patrick used to close the finish gate but persevered whenever conditions were tough.  Benoit, who sailed an impressive Race 2, and Reinhart, who made the transition from junior Patin recently, closed the ranking.

We want to thank Johan and Patrick and the whole Twinsclub Team for their support and warm welcome to the Patin Sailors.  Thanks to Race Officer Klaas and his Race Committee team ( those  in the support boats and on the Marina boat as those ashore ) who endured two days of wave hopping.

We hope to see the 18 patinairos joined by many more ( open to all nationalities ) in the nexth seventh edition of the Nosepasa Championship of Nations.
