For the fifth time, Jacob retakes the Belgian Champion title
during the ninth Belgian Championship at Twinsclub, Bredene.
Twenty patins entered the Championship. Three new Patin-sailors
made their introduction in regatta sailing.
The prologue on Friday evening couldn't be sailed because of
excess of wind ( 22-26 knots ).
So races started on Saturday. The sea was rather agitated
and the breeze blew from WSW some 22 - 20 knots. Two masts were broken
due to capsizing and masts bouncing against the sea bottom. Conditions
were especially hard for the youngest and lightest competitors. Although
he made a very strong impression at the start of the Championship, Antoon had
to quit racing after a shoulder injury made further sailing impossible.
Simon and Johan had to change their mast.
Saturday evening saw the competitors and their families and
friends united on a WOK evening at the beach, which started after a Haka
traditional dance demonstration. Olympic medal winner Sebastien Godefroid
joined the company : a group photo in front of the Twinsclub beach house was
obligatory.
On Sunday, the SSW wind came slightly from the shore, so the
sea calmed a lot. The wind was still prominent, with a velocity of some
20 knots. Three races were sailed consecutively : the race officer showed
no mercy.
Jacob sailed an impressive series, only disrupted by his
capsize in the last race. Bernard followed closely and finished first in
two races. Jurgen, last year's champion, sailed a very consistent
series. Gert & Mark missed the podium. The four first places
were all occupied by the Belgian Champions of the past. The prize giving
started after another Haka dance, this time performed by all the competitors :
an ideal occasion for some hilarious photographs.
All participants want to thank Johan and Patrick of Twinsclub
who warmly welcomed the Championship, the rescue team led by assistant Race
Officer Bruno, and the whole shore crew ( inclusive the secretary led by Nicole
). They also want to express their gratitude for the support of Rik and
his boat's team and of the Marina Regatta boat's team Erik and Renée; for the
excellent guidance of the Championship by the Principal Race Officer Peter and
for the presence of the Jury led by Filip.
BK 2009 Het wordt stilaan een gewoonte; wanneer het BK patin
wordt gezeild, dan waait het hard. Vorig jaar (en ook wel 2003) mocht hier de
uitzondering op zijn die de regel bevestigt, maar kijk maar eens de gegevens na
van alle andere jaren. Er zit steeds een dagje met windkracht 7, 6 of 5 in het
kampioenschap.
Op vrijdag was de wind hard genoeg om slechts een uurtje te twijfelen of er nog
gezeild kon worden. De pro-windsurfers sprongen zelfs dubbele salto's, en de
schuimkoppen stonden er prachtig bij onder de stralende zon.
Zaterdagochtend werd westelijk vier a vijf voorspeld, en ja die kregen we de
hele dag.
Van opwarmen was er weinig sprake, en jammer genoeg werden er al gauw twee
masten beschadigd bij het doorkantelen. Het kan niet genoeg herhaald worden: de
patin is een ideale boot voor ondiep water, maar dan wel met de mast naar boven
gericht! Omgedraaid vaart hij echt niet goed en maak je kans op schade...
Na een eerste snelle manche kon iedereen wat bijtanken aan land, en zijn mast,
zeil en/of outfit wat aanpassen voor de twee namiddagraces; de éne met de
gedachte van "hopelijk blijft het even hard waaien", en de andere
hopend op wat minder wind, en reeds uitkijkend naar zondag, waarop "veel
lichtere wind" voorspeld was. Reeks twee kon iets fijner gezeild worden met
een 4 beaufort, soms 3, maar reeks drie bracht weer een goede 4 tot 5.
Op zondagmorgen stond er nog wel ergens 3 in de voorspellingen, zodat sommigen
de mooiste lichtweerzeilen in de aanslag brachten, maar het waren vooral de 4 en
zeker de vlagen dikke 5 die het meest opvielen.
Alle zeilers hebben hun beste beentje voorgezet en gedaan wat ze konden tijdens
nog eens drie manches. De drie nieuwelingen hebben de goede beslissing
genomen door niet te lang te varen onder deze stevige omstandigheden. Men leert
de kneepjes van het patinzeilen toch beter met wat lichter weer. Hier en daar
werden zeilers wel eens gehinderd door een manoeuver van een ander, maar op
sportieve wijze werd nooit geprotesteerd tot grote verbazing van onze Race
Officer en zijn jury.
Al bij al was het een mooie sportieve wedstrijd, waar iedereen weer veel van zal
bijgeleerd hebben!
