Oriol Castellá takes the European title from last year champion Quim ! Bernard finishes an honourable 17 th.
First time the European Championship took place in Northern Catalunya : in the waters of the bay of Palamós, at the Club de Vela St Antoni de Calonge, home of patin pioneer Guido Depoorter. In fact the club is situated in front of his residence, so you will always find a Depoorter family member on the beach : either one of his sons ( Joost or Koen ) engaged in the sail-making business, or his grandchildren Victor or Alex. The weather outlook was not very promising : the Tramontana wind was dominant, so the temperatures weren't very enjoyable. The impeccable organization although made this less relevant : each racing day was concluded with a heart warming buffet in the local hotel Aubi. Races started on Friday. The afternoon brought some clearances and a light sea breeze : so after a delay the races started. It was a delight to see the Santa Eulalia and other old sailing vessels enter the bay just before our starting sequence. The wind increased in force : by the second race it blew some 15 knots. We finished two races in a fine sailing weather. It was obvious : Bernard was in a great shape ( or was it the shape of his new sail and mast ? ) Saturday was sunny, and the sailing was very enjoyable. Another two races were completed. As there was less wind and a choppy sea in the second race, the conditions were more difficult, and the landing through the surf was in some cases somewhat hazardous. Sunday started with rain and a strong Tramontana wind : gusts of more than 28 knots. Only one race was sailed, several masts broke or were bended. Oriol, who started sailing in St Antoni, took the title before last year's Champion Quim. Adriá, a local sailor also, finished third. Bernard finished 17, Gert and Hans 33 and 34, and Paul 60. In the Junior class, Oriol M was unbeatable, and finished before Toni and Claudia. Baptiste sailed his first Patin Jr race on friday. We were delighted by the beauty of the St Antoni and Palamós surroundings and the local gastronomy : a place certainly to revisit ! Final
